Delaware is an unincorporated community in Grant Township, Keweenaw County, Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1846 as a copper mining town. It is located on the Keweenaw Peninsula ten miles south of Copper Harbor and about 25 miles north of Calumet. It had about 100 inhabitants when the city was founded and grew to nearly 1200 inhabitants by the time it was fully operational. In the early days of the city, mining companies took everything with them, including homes, mining buildings, schools, a grocery store, and a church. Today all that remains is a mining circuit and the foundations of old mining buildings. This was mainly because there was no other work and the city is very remote. The city tried to survive but ultimately failed. The Bete Grise Lighthouse is located in the area. Delaware is known as the 'Snow Capital of the Midwest'. The Keweenaw County Highway Commission maintains an unofficial snowfall log at this location. The annual average since 1910 is about 240 inches. This is largely due to the lake effect of the snow. This average is the highest of any location in the Great Lakes Snow Belts. In the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, only a few mountainous New England resorts see more snow. During the winter of 1978-79, the Delaware station had a record snowfall of 390 inches. Measurements are taken at this station once a day. Official stations of the National Weather Service measure snowfall every six hours. This procedural difference results in a systematic underreporting of snowfall in Delaware due to the accumulation of new snow in the 24-hour period. To illustrate, Mount Bohemia, a ski resort near Lac La Belle, Michigan, reports an annual average of 273 inches.
