In volleyball, the program has been state champion eight times since 2001 and has won three state championship titles (2005, 2010 and 2011). In football, the team was a 2001 national champion. The football program also produced Mike Teeter, who played defense at the University of Michigan and in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Oilers. In wrestling, the team has won two of the last three county titles and has had several state qualifiers over the years, including sending six wrestlers to state championships in 2014. Fruitport was founded in 1868 by Edward L. Craw, which gave it its name Crawville. It was renamed Fruitport a year later when the Father Marquette Railroad built a station there because the city was in the middle of a fertile orchard and also a port. It was incorporated as a village in 1891. In an election held on November 8, 2005, 306 residents voted to dissolve the city's municipal body, while 155 voted against. However, a two-thirds majority (308 votes) was required to dissolve the city. It was the fourth time since 1979 that a proposed dissolution of the municipality was voted on. In 1990, a proposed dissolution was rejected by a 2-1 majority, while a 1998 proposal failed by 41 votes.
