Idlewild is an unincorporated community in Yates Township, east of Baldwin in southeast Lake County, a rural part of lower northwest Michigan. During the first half of the 20th century, it was one of the few resorts in the country where African Americans could vacation and buy real estate before the 1964 Civil Rights Act outlawed discrimination. The area is within the Manistee National Forest. The community includes Idlewild Lake and the headwaters of the Pere Marquette River span the entire area. From 1912 until the mid-1960s, Idlewild was nicknamed the 'Black Eden of Michigan'. It was an active community throughout the year and was frequented by renowned artists and professionals from all over the country. At its peak, it was one of the Midwest's most popular resort towns, and at the height of summer, up to 25,000 people flocked to Idlewild to camp, swim, boat, fish, hunt, ride horses, skate, and sleep. inside entertainment. When the Civil Rights Act of 1964 opened more resorts in many states for African Americans, Idlewild's boom days were over. While not truly a 'ghost town' as the book Ghost Towns of Michigan Chapter 7 states, as of 2019 the population was less than 1,000 and many buildings were empty. Founded in 2000 by John O. Meeks, the Idlewild African-American Chamber of Commerce continues to promote existing local businesses and seek new ones. Work is also underway to attract more visitors to the area through events and other strategies in hopes of revitalizing the once bustling city.
