Mackinac Island (/mkn/ MAK-in-aw) is a city in Mackinac County, Michigan, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had 583 permanent residents. Due to the influx of visitors and hundreds of temporary workers, the population is in the tens of thousands from May 1st to October 31st. The city was founded in the 18th century as a major fur trading center with a predominantly French-Canadian and French-speaking Mtis population, and gained more Anglo-American residents after the War of 1812. The United States placed restrictions on the fur trade on the canadians. From 1818 to 1882, the city served as the county seat of what was once Michilimackinac County, later organized into Mackinac County, with St. Ignace designated as the county seat. The city includes all of Mackinac Island and originally included nearby Round Island, which is uninhabited and is now federally owned and part of the Hiawatha National Forest. The state park and national forest make up most of the city. A single local ordinance, dating back to 1898, prohibits the use of any motor vehicle on the island. The only exceptions to this rule are city emergency vehicles (ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks), city service vehicles, and snowmobiles in the winter. The most common means of transportation today are on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or in a horse-drawn carriage. With the exception of the city center, roller skates and inline skates are also permitted. Mackinac Island is home to the Grand Hotel, built in the 19th century when the island was becoming a summer destination. When the 1980 film Somewhere in Time was filmed here, the city made an exception and allowed the production company to use motor vehicles on the island. Mackinac Island is known for its many sweet shops, a tourist attraction. There is a large artisanal industry on the island which is dedicated to the production of sweets in the traditional way, making portions on cold marble slabs. The many varieties attract tourists and are often given as gifts throughout Michigan.
