Mackinaw City (/mkn/ MAK-in-aw) is a city in Emmet and Cheboygan Counties, Michigan, United States. At the 2010 census, the population was 846. The population increases during the summer, including an influx of tourists and seasonal workers who work in shops, hotels and other recreational facilities in the area. Mackinaw City is located at the northern end (tip) of Michigan's lower peninsula on the southern shore of the Strait of Mackinac. Across the strait is the state's Upper Peninsula. These two land masses are physically connected by the Mackinac Bridge, which connects Mackinaw City to the north with St. Ignace. Mackinaw City is also the primary hub for ferry services to Mackinac Island, northeast of the strait. According to AAA TripTik data from 2009, Mackinaw City is the most popular resort town in the state of Michigan. Local attractions include Fort Michilimakinac, Mackinac Bridge, Mackinaw Crossings Mall, Mill Creek, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, Historic Village, McGulpin Point Lighthouse, and Mackinaw, the former US Coast Guard icebreaker. Mackinaw's name is a translation of 'Mackinac', a strait between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, an island in the strait, and a major island trading center; finally from Ojibwe mishinii-makinaang ('instead of many snapping turtles'). The community's official name is The Village of Mackinaw City, and as the name suggests, it is a state-incorporated village. Mackinaw City is governed by General Village Law, Public Law No. 3, of 1895, as modified. The downtown district and much of the development is in Mackinaw Township, Cheboygan County, but the majority of the city is in Wawatam Township, Emmet County, which borders Mackinaw to the west.
