Pontiac (/pn(t)ik/ POHN-tee-ack) is a city and county seat in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 61,606. Pontiac is a northern suburb of the Detroit metropolitan area, located approximately 20 miles (32.2 km) northwest of Detroit. Founded in 1818, Pontiac was Michigan's second organized European-American settlement near Detroit, after Dearborn. It is named after Pontiac, a warlord of the Ottawa tribe who occupied the area from European settlers. The city was best known for its 20th-century General Motors automobile factories, which formed the backbone of its economy and contributed to the region's prosperity. These included Fisher Body, Pontiac East Assembly (aka Truck & Coach/Bus), which manufactured GMC products, and Pontiac Motor Division. During the city's heyday, it was home to the main automobile assembly plant for the production of the famous Pontiac cars, the marque that bears the city's name. The Pontiac brand itself was discontinued by General Motors in 2010. The city of Pontiac was also home to the Oakland Motor Car Company, which General Motors acquired in 1909. In 1975, the city built the Pontiac Silverdome, the stadium that housed the Detroit Lions of the National Football League from 1975 to 2001. The team returned to downtown Detroit at Ford Field. Super Bowl XVI was played at the Silverdome in 1982. After 2001, the stadium continued to be used for concerts and other events until its demolition in 2018. Today, it is the headquarters of Amazon Logistics and Distribution.
