Seney is an unincorporated community in Schoolcraft County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, United States. The M-28 National Highway passes through Seney. The historic community of Seney began as a railroad stop in 1881. Logging companies soon moved into the area to clear the area's white pine forests. Seney quickly grew to over 3,000 people. During this time, the city gained a reputation for being loud and dangerous due to its booming economy and numerous saloons. By the end of the 19th century, logging and numerous fires had decimated the pine forests in the area, and the logging companies left, causing the city to shrink considerably. There are currently less than 200 people. Today the city is considered the gateway to recreation and tourism in the region. It sits on the edge of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge operated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and is a step toward the eastern end of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Seney is also the terminus of the Fox River Pathway (which connects to the North Country Trail). The city was mentioned in Ernest Hemingway's short story Big Two-Hearted River, which Hemingway based on a visit he paid to the city as a young man. he also mentioned the city in his 1923 poem 'Along with the Youth.' Leon Czolgosz, the man who assassinated President William Mckinley, lived in Seney during the boom years when he worked on the local railroad. Seney is at the eastern end of the Seney section. Outside the city there is a 'Boot Hill' cemetery. The community is located in Seney Township, Michigan. Incredible Seney: The First Complete Story of Michigan's Fabulous Lumber Town (1953) is a non-fiction book about Seney's historical boom years, written by Lewis Reimann.
