Shields is an unincorporated community in Thomas Township, Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. It is also a Census Designated Place (CDP) for statistical purposes, but without legal personality as a registered municipality. The CDP population was 6,590 at the 2000 census. The community of Shields is located off the M-46/Gratiot Highway west of the Tittabawassee River. As of the 2000 census, the CDP included an area bounded by the Tittabawassee River on the east, State Street on the north, N. Miller Road on the west, Geddes Road on the south, and N. Thomas Road on the west and is bounded on the south by the M -46/Gratiot Road, east to Swan Creek, south to Schomaker Road railroad crossing, east along railroad tracks to Stroebel Road, northwest to Ronald Drive, and east to Tittabawassee River . Most of the CDP is in Thomas Township, with a small portion extending northwest into James Township. A post office operated in Shields from August 15, 1894 to December 15, 1902. The Shields brothers William and Arthur were born in Ireland in 1811 and 1817, respectively. They both emigrated to Michigan in 1842 to settle in Thomas Township. The single brothers settled on 120 acres (0.49 km2) in the third section. Eventually the southeastern part of the parish became the Shields Region. William died in 1894 and Arthur in 1905. Both are buried in Owen Cemetery.
