White Rock is an unincorporated community in Huron County, Michigan, United States. The community is located in the town of Sherman. As an unincorporated community, White Rock has no legal autonomy, defined boundaries, or its own population statistics. It is located at 434235N 823631W / 43.70972N 82.60861W, about three miles north of Forestville and about nine miles south of Harbor Beach on the M -25 at the crossroads with the Rocher Blanc route. The community is named after a large white rock overlooking Lake Huron at 434309N 823616W / 43.71917N 82.60444W, used as a marker to define what was ceded of the Territory from Ottawa served. Chippewa, Wyandot, and Potawatomi with the Treaty of Detroit in 1807. The definition of boundaries in the treaty began with 'the mouth of the Miami Lakes River' or what is now known as the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio. From there, the boundary ran up the middle of the river to the mouth of the Auglaize River at present-day Defiance, Ohio, and then north to cut a line of latitude at the mouth of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River. This north-south line would become the Michigan meridian used in the Michigan survey. The intersecting line of latitude crossed the meridian at the northeast corner of what is now Sciota Township, Shiawassee County, in the middle of the Clinton County line. From that point, the treaty boundary extended northeast to White Rock on Lake Huron, then east to the international border with what was then Upper Canada, and then along the international border across the St. Clair, Lake St. Clair and Detroit. then into Lake Erie to a point east of the mouth of the Maumee River, and finally west to the starting point. Edward Petit, the first white settler in Huron County, opened a trading post near Shebeon Creek and later moved it to White Rock. It is marked as 'White Rock City' on some older maps. It was a prosperous town in the mid-1830s and gained its own post office in 1859. The community was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1871 (also known as the Port Huron Fire of 1871, which destroyed much of the lower Michigan peninsula), but it is was dwarfed by the Great Chicago Fire and the Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin, which occurred on the same day. The city was quickly rebuilt, but never grew beyond the stage of a small community. The Michigan Department of Transportation broke ground on White Rock Roadside Park along M-25 in 2000. Completed in 2003, the small park includes parking lots, outbuildings, a historic marker, a picnic area with tables, a gazebo, and access public at lake beach. ferret. From 12 August 2018, the panoramic staircase will be permanently closed because it was removed for reasons of public safety.
