Wyoming is a city in Kent county in the US state of Michigan. At the 2020 census, the population was 76,501. Wyoming is the second largest community in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area, bordering Grand Rapids to the northeast. It is also the second largest city in Western Michigan after Grand Rapids. The area was the second locality in Kent County to be settled by Europeans on the banks of Buck Creek in 1832, and was organized as a Wyoming Township in 1848 when it was separated from the northern half of Byron Township. During the 18th and early 20th centuries, Wyoming served as a rural area that supplied goods to Grand Rapids, although the community experienced suburbanization with the early 19th century. After Grandville seceded from the township in 1933 and Wyoming experienced further growth with the opening of the General Motors Stamping Plant, Wyoming was embroiled in annexation disputes with Grand Rapids and Grandville until the township was incorporated as a state city.
