Columbia /klmbi/ is a city in the US state of Missouri. It is the seat of Boone County and the University of Missouri. Founded in 1821, it is the metropolitan area capital of five Columbia counties. With an estimated 126,254 residents as of 2020, it is the fourth largest and fastest growing city in Missouri. A college town in the Midwest, Columbia is known for its progressive politics, persuasive journalism, and public art. The tripartite establishment of Stephens College (1833), the University of Missouri (1839), and Columbia College (1851) surrounding downtown to the east, south, and north made the city a center of learning. Central to it is 8th Street (also known as the Avenue of Columns), which connects Francis Quadrangle and Jesse Hall to the Boone County Courthouse and City Hall. Originally an agricultural city, today's spirit culture is the main economic center of Colombia. The city's economy also relies on healthcare, insurance and technology companies, but it has never been a major manufacturing hub. Companies such as Shelter Insurance, Carfax, Veterans United Home Loans and Slackers CD and Games have been established in the city. Cultural institutions include the Missouri State Historical Society, the Museum of Art and Archaeology, the True/False Film Festival and the Roots N Blues Festival. The Missouri Tigers, the only major college athletic program in the state, play football at Faurot Field and basketball at Mizzou Arena as members of the strict Southeastern Conference. The city is located on forested hills and rolling prairies in central Missouri near the Missouri River Valley where the Ozarks begin to give way to plains and savannas. The limestone forms cliffs and clearings when rain dissolves the bedrock, creating caves and springs that irrigate Hinkson, Roche Perche and Bonne Femme streams. Surrounding the city, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, Mark Twain National Forest, and Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge form a green belt that protects sensitive and rare habitats. The Columbia Farmers Market is located in the Columbia Agricultural Park. The first people to enter the area at least 12,000 years ago were nomadic hunters. Later the woodland tribes lived in villages along streams and built high mounds. The Osage and Missouria nations were driven out by the exploration of French traders and the rapid settlement of American pioneers. The latter came from Boone's Lick Road and was descended from the culture of the southern highlands, especially Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. Beginning in 1812, the Boonslick area played an integral role in Missouri's early history and westward expansion. German, Irish and European immigrants soon joined. The modern population is exceptionally diverse, with over 8% being foreign born. Whites and blacks are the largest ethnic group, and people of Asian descent make up the third largest group. The city is also known as 'Athens of Missouri' due to its classical beauty and educational interest, but is more commonly known as 'CoMo'.
