Leland is a city in Washington County, Mississippi, United States. It is in the Mississippi Delta on the banks of Deer Creek. At the 2010 census, the population was 4,481. It was once a railway town and has long been a center for growing cotton, which remains an important staple in rural areas. Due to rapid growth in residents, businesses, and schools, it was ranked the second largest city in Washington County in 1920. Even before the Civil War, agriculture was the foundation of the local economy. There are several private farms in and around the city limits. Mississippi State University and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) operate an agricultural research station in Stoneville, just outside of Leland. Other farms in the area include Lauren Farms BASF Stoneville Cotton, Bayer Crops Science, GreenPoint Ag, Azlin Seed Service, Corteva Agriscience, Pettiet Agricultural Services, Inc., Nutrien Ag Solutions, K-I Chemical U.S.A., Greenland Planting Company, Ayers Delta Implement, Edward's Flying Service, Essie Patterson Farm Trucking and the Southern Seed Association. Cotton, soybeans, rice and corn are the main staple foods along with catfish. Several national and regional blues musicians hail from Leland. Leland has five markers on the Mississippi Blues Trail commemorating the small town's significant contribution to blues history. Featured on many blues recordings, Highway 61 runs through the city and gives its name to the Community Blues Museum. Leland is the burial place of folk artist and blues musician James 'Son' Thomas, who lived near the railroad tracks for many years. Thomas is buried under a headstone donated by the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund, to which Creedence Clearwater Revival musician John Fogerty makes an annual contribution. Blues musician Johnny Winter spent part of his childhood in Leland. Winter's grandfather and father, a former mayor of Leland, ran JD Winter & Sons, a cotton business. One of the signs on the Blues Trail in Leland is dedicated to winter. The community is the childhood home of puppeteer Jim Henson, who was born in Greenville but raised in Leland. Here he created the character of Kermit the Frog, a Muppet. The city has a museum on the banks of Deer Creek that celebrates Henson's accomplishments: the Jim Henson exhibit. Leland was chosen as the location for the Mississippi Wildlife Heritage Museum, which opened in 2016.
