Meridian is the seventh largest city in the U.S. state of Mississippi, with a population of 41,148 in 2010 and an estimated population of 36,347 in 2018. It is the county seat of Lauderdale County and the capital of the Meridian, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city is on major highways 90 miles (150 km) east of Jackson, Mississippi; 154 miles (248 km) SW of Birmingham, Alabama; 202 miles (325 km) northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana; and 372 km southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1860 at the intersection of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and the Southern Railway of Mississippi, Meridian built an economy based on the railroad and the goods it carried and became a strategic commercial center. During the American Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman burned much of the city at the Battle of Meridian (February 1864). Rebuilt after the war, the city experienced a 'golden age'. Between 1890 and 1930, it became the largest city in Mississippi and a major manufacturing center in the South, with 44 trains arriving and departing each day. Built in 1906, Union Station is now a multimodal hub with access to Amtrak and Greyhound buses, which carry an average of 242,360 passengers annually. Although the economy has slowed with the decline of the railway industry, the city has diversified and as of 2010 most people work in healthcare, military and manufacturing. According to 2008 census estimates, the population within the city limits is 38,232. But a population of 232,900 within a 45-mile (72 km) radius and 526,500 within a 65-mile (105 km) radius, of whom 104,600, 234, and 200 are active respectively, fuels the city's economy. The area is home to two military installations, Naval Air Station Meridian and Key Field, which employ more than 4,000 people. NAS Meridian is home to the Regional Drug Enforcement Training Academy (RCTA) and the state's first local Department of Homeland Security. Air Wing ONE (Strike Flight Training) students practice in the T-45C Goshawk trainer jet. Key Field is named for brothers Fred and Al Key, who set a world record for long-distance flying in 1935. The field is now home to the Air National Guard's 186th Air Refueling Wing and a support facility for the 185th Aviation Brigade of the Army National Guard. With 2,610 employees, Rush Foundation Hospital is the largest non-military employer in the region. The many arts organizations and historic buildings in the city include the Riley Center, the Meridian Museum of Art, the Meridian Little Theater and the Meridian Symphony Orchestra. Meridian housed two Carnegie libraries, one for whites and one for African Americans. The now-demolished Carnegie Branch Library was one of several Carnegie Libraries built during the era of black segregation in the American South. Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience (MAX) is located in downtown Meridian. Jimmie Rodgers, the 'Father of Country Music,' was born in Meridian. Highland Park has a museum displaying memorabilia from his life and career, as well as steam-era railway equipment. The park is also home to Highland Park Dentzel Carousel, a National Historic Landmark. This is the only fixed two-row Dentzel Menagerie in the world. Other notable natives include Miss America 1986 Susan Akin; James Chaney, an activist who was one of three civil rights activists murdered in 1964; singer Paul Davis; and Hartley Peavey, founder of Meridian-based Peavey Electronics. The federal courthouse was the site of the 1966-67 trial of suspects in the murders of Chaney and two other activists. For the first time, an all-white jury has convicted a white civil rights officer of murder.
