Fairfield is a city in Teton County, Montana, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 759. Fairfield is the self-proclaimed 'Master Barley Capital of the World' with 83,000 acres (336 km2) of irrigated farmland and 56,000 acres (227 km2) of rain-pollinated farmland used to grow malted barley in the area. Originally a station in Milwaukee, Fairfield is located between Great Falls and Choteau and near Freezeout Lake (from Cheney's Names on the Face of Montana, Mountain Press Publishing Company), where up to 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 swans congregate in March. tundra. Fairfield serves as a shopping center for Greenfield Bench farmers. Irrigation now supplies the crops, but in the early days a dry summer made grass scarce and the area was nicknamed the Bench of Frost. 'Greenfield Bench' and Fairfield now describe the hay and wheat fields around the city. Although the federal government opened this area of Montana to family farming in 1862, it wasn't until 1909 that settlers really came to the Fairfield area, when Congress liberalized that statute, giving settlers 320 acres of land free instead of 160. This became clear, however, small farms of 160 or 320 acres made little sense in the vast, arid landscape of Montana. After an investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation, it was determined that Sun River Canyon could be dammed and irrigation water in the Fairfield area would be feasible if many more settlers were attracted to Fairfield. Gibson Dam was completed in 1929. Today, the Greenfield Irrigation District distributes water from Gibson Dam to approximately 83,000 acres around this community. Known as the 'malting barley capital of the world,' Fairfield is a commercial hub for the farming community and home to Busch Agricultural Resources, 3 Rivers Telephone Cooperative, and the Sun River Electric Cooperative.
