Ringling is an unincorporated community in southern Meagher County, Montana on the route of U.S. Route 89. The town was a stop on the transcontinental Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad ('Milwaukee Route') mainline. ; It was also the southern terminus of the White Sulfur Springs and Yellowstone Park Railway, which ran from Ringling to White Sulfur Springs. The Ringling served as a community center for the surrounding ranchers and farmers, but the town's population declined for most of the 20th century as agricultural activity in the area declined. Both railway lines were decommissioned in 1980 and today only a few people live in the village. Ringling was originally named Leader, but was renamed after John Ringling of the Ringling Brothers Circus family after the construction of the White Sulfur Springs and Yellowstone Park Railway. John Ringling was a railway financier and its president. He also owned a summer home and spa in White Sulfur Springs, as well as a sizable ranch in the area. The terrain (which includes the Ringling and surrounding areas) has one of the warmest average January temperatures in the state of Montana due to the Chinook winds. The same steady warming was responsible for the ice-free corridor that may have allowed the ancestors of most Native Americans to enter the North American continent during the Pleistocene. The Ringling is widely known as the setting for parts of Ivan Doig's 1979 book This House of Sky. The city was also the subject of Jimmy Buffett's song 'Ringling, Ringling' from his 1974 album Living & Dying in 3/4 Time.
