Wilmington is a port city and the county seat of New Hanover County on the southeastern coast of North Carolina, United States. With a population of 115,955 as of the 2020 United States Census, it is the eighth largest city in the state. In the late 19th century, Wilmington was a prosperous, predominantly black, racially integrated city and the largest city in North Carolina. In the Wilmington Massacre of 1898, white supremacists staged a coup that overthrew the legitimately elected local Fusionist government. They drove black and white opposition leaders out of the city, destroyed Civil War-built property and businesses owned by black citizens, including the city's only black newspaper, and killed between 60 and more than 300 people. This coincided with broader state-level disenfranchisement efforts. While North Carolina had 125,000 registered black voters in 1896, it was 6,000 in 1902. In 1910, Charlotte surpassed Wilmington as North Carolina's largest city. In 2003, the city was designated a 'Coast Guard City' by the United States Congress, one of twenty-nine cities that currently hold that designation, and was the home base of the USCGC Stagecoach, a medium-sized vessel of the US Coast Guard 2020 The 2 September 2020, then-President Trump officially declared Wilmington the nation's first World Heritage City since World War II. Now a war memorial, the WWII battleship USS North Carolina is moored off the downtown harbor and is open to the public for tours. Other attractions include the Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, the Wilmington Children's Museum, and the Wilmington Hammerheads United Soccer Leagues football club. Wilmington is also home to EUE/Screen Gems Studios, the largest national film and television production facility outside of California. Dream Stage 10, the facility's newest stage, is the third largest in the United States. It houses the largest special effects water tank in North America. Since the studio opened in 1984, Wilmington has become a major center for American film and television production. Many films of various genres and several television series have been produced here, including Iron Man 3, Super Mario Bros., The Conjuring, The Crow, We're the Millers, Fox's Sleepy Hollow, One Tree Hill, Dawson's Creek and Revolution of NBC. .
