Trenton is the capital of the US state of New Jersey and the county seat of Mercer County. It was the capital of the United States from November 1 to December 24, 1784. Trenton Township was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798 as one of New Jersey's first groups of 104 townships. On February 22, 1834, parts of Trenton Township were combined to form Ewing Township. The remainder of Trenton parish was incorporated into the Town of Trenton on 10 April 1837. Over a period of 50 years there was a series of annexations, with the Town of South Trenton (14 April 1851) and parts of the parish taking Nottingham (14 April 1856), both Chambersburg Borough and Millham Borough (both 30 March 1888) and Wilbur Borough (28 February 1898). Parts of Ewing Township and Hamilton Township were annexed into Trenton on March 23, 1900.
