Antelope Wells is a small unincorporated community in Hidalgo County, New Mexico, United States. The community is located on the US-Mexico border in the Bootheel region of New Mexico, just across the border from the small settlement of El Berrendo, Chihuahua, Mexico. Despite the name, there are no antelopes or springs in the area. The name comes from an old ranch located 4.0 km north of the present community. The only residents in the community are employees of the US Customs and Border Protection. Antelope Wells is the southernmost settlement in New Mexico and is located in the Bootheel region of New Mexico. It is the smallest and least used border crossing of the 43 entry points along the border with Mexico. The crossing, open only to non-commercial traffic, is open every day from 10:00 to 16:00. The port was founded by Ulysses S. Grant in 1872 and has been open since 1928. In 1981 two people lived in the community in trailers behind the customs house and an average of three people arrived a day. In 2005, 93 pedestrians crossed the border into the community, which consisted of just four buildings: the port building, two houses and a trailer. Including domestic and international travelers, fewer than 500 buses and private vehicles pass through the community each month, though traffic has increased since 2006 with more international transit services. Despite its low utilization, there are no plans to close the port as it is the only port between Douglas, Arizona and Columbus, New Mexico and offers the most direct connection from the United States to the Sierra Madre Occidental.
