Lamy is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, United States, 18 miles (29 km) south of the city of Santa Fe. The parish was named in honor of Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy and sits within the city's Spanish land grant from Bishop John Lamy, which dates back to the 18th century. Lamy is part of the Santa Fe, New Mexico metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 218. The former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF), now Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF), passes through Lamy. Commonly known simply as the 'Santa Fe,' this railroad was originally intended to run from Atchison, Kansas along the Missouri River to Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, and then west. However, when the tracks were moved to western New Mexico, the civil engineers responsible found that the hills around Santa Fe made it impassable. So they built the railroad through Lamy. Later a branch line was built from Lamy to Santa Fe, eventually bringing the railroad to Santa Fe. In 1896, the Fred Harvey Company built the luxurious Hotel El Ortiz there. This made Lamy an important railway junction. From 1992 to 2014, the branch was taken over by the Santa Fe Southern Railroad, which operated a popular excursion train between Santa Fe and Lamy using antique passenger cars and modern boxcars. In 2020, several prominent Santa Fe residents, including writer George R. R. Martin, founded the Sky Railway, a tourist train that operates the Santa Fe Southern Railroad route between Lamy and Santa Fe. The Sky Railway began operations in December 2021. Lamy's importance as a railroad hub is chronicled in the Academy Award-nominated documentary The Day After Trinity (1980) about the construction of the first atomic bomb, and quoted by the California Guitar Trio in a five-part sequel Train to Lamy on her second album Invitation (1995) .
