Velarde is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 502 at the time of the 2010 census. Velarde is located on New Mexico Route 68 in the Rio Grande Rift where the highway enters the Rio Grande Gorge. In 1750, Juan Matias Velarde moved to Velarde (New Mexico Blue Book 2012), later called La Joya after his Spanish-born ancestor Juan Antonio Prez Velarde, who lived near El Paso del Ro del Norte (now Ciudad Jurez ). ) in 1725. His move to this colony on the Rio Grande encouraged other members of his family to move north to colonial New Mexico in the mid-18th century. In 1750, Juan Matas Velarde founded the city as 'La Joya', the name probably derived from a 1712 Spanish land grant given to Sebastin Martn during the resettlement of the area after the Pueblo Rebellion. It was probably a misspelling of 'La Joya' which means 'The Jewel' in Spanish. The Tewa name of the place was Phahu'bu'u or Tsigubu'u, meaning 'Chico Bush Pond or Rabbit Thorn'. Located at the mouth of the Rio Grande Canyon on the Camino Bajo in Taos (not actually part of the Camino Real, although the old route through Embudo Pass is designated as such by a historical marker), the community has seen its Hispaniola history served mainly as a quiet resting place for passing travellers, especially those heading north from the Land of the Low Rivers. However, during the Taos Rebellion in the second half of the Mexican-American War, it was part of the scene of the Battle of Embudo Pass, which took place on January 29, 1847. The 'rock fragments' carved into defensive positions became the Tewa warriors and the defenders Mexicans in battle were defeated by the American military governor, Colonel Sterling Price, and his Missouri Mounted Volunteers traveling to American headquarters at Taos Pueblo less than a week's march later. Carved crosses still mark the rocks near where the 20 local fighters fell. On a map drawn by the American invaders of the time, the colony was referred to simply as 'Jewel'. Sometime after the battle, Colonel Edwin Vose Sumner, who later served as military governor of New Mexico from 1851 to 1853, sent Major Gordon with a detachment of infantry to establish a post below the Rio Grande Canyon in what is now Velarde, but as soon as his men were stationed, the unit was ordered back to Taos. Although the town originally belonged to the parish of San Antonio de Embudo (based in Dixon), there is a mission church called 'Iglesia de la Virgen de Guadalupe'. Occasional burials were held here, but most took place in Velarde Cemetery. Wedding ceremonies were sometimes held at Dixon's St. Anthony's Church, but more often at St. John of the Knights (now Ohkay Owingeh) Catholic Church. The orchards and vineyards were mentioned in an 1892 news report, but the first apple-growing businesses did not emerge until the late 1920s. Roadside kiosks greeted passing travelers while new construction was built. Taos.
