Gold Hill is an unincorporated community in Storey County, Nevada, located south of and below Virginia City. Founded on December 17, 1862, the community once had a population of at least 8,000 to avoid annexation by its larger neighbor. Prosperity was maintained over a 20-year period between 1868 and 1888 through the mining of the Comstock Lode, a large gold and silver deposit. Mines like Yellow Jacket, Crown Point and Belcher each generated more than $10 million in dividends. Historic remnants of the city can still be seen, including the Gold Hill Hotel, believed to be the oldest hotel in Nevada, having been around since 1861; the old Bank of California building; the restored Virginia & Truckee Railroad depot; the Depression-era Crown Point Factory; and the remains of various mines and dwellings in various states of restoration and repair. Although Gold Hill is dwarfed by nearby Virginia City, it still benefits from a thriving entertainment industry. Gold Hill News was founded in 1863 and Gold Hill had a theater in 1862. The demographics reflected Virginia City, where one-third of the population worked in the mines and Irish immigrants dominated numerically. Journalist Alfred Doten is associated with the city. His numerous diaries, available in the Special Collections of the University of Nevada Reno, provide a rich and detailed history of his experiences in the American West in the 19th century. One of the most important Cornish settlements on the Comstock Lode was on Gold Hill. The Gold Hill Post Office operated until 1943. Today Gold Hill exists as a shell unto itself; The population was 191 in 2005. It is part of the Reno-Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. A later mining complex in the area operated from 1927 to 1942, when mining operations were halted by War Production Board Order L-208 and all non-essential gold mines in the United States were closed. After 1930, nearly a hundred million dollars worth of minerals were mined. Active mining returned to lower Gold Hill with production beginning at Comstock Mining's Lucerne, Hartford and Billy The Kid mines. In 1976, Bob Gray, a former Marine Corps photographer during World War II and an admirer of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad since his youth, bought a disused stretch of railroad between Virginia City and a point about two miles south. He laid the tracks in this right-of-way and began operating a steam-powered tourist railway. The trail was extended to Gold Hill in 1992, and the Gold Hill Historical Society was formed in 1994 to preserve the Gold Hill Depot, one of the few wooden buildings in the area to survive the Virginia City fire of 1875. After ten years seeking grants, lobbying, and raising steel railroad donations through the Gold Hill Historical Society, the mayor of Carson City approved a bid for a contract to rebuild the railroad tracks between Gold Hill and the Carson River (fifteen miles of distance). Today, Gold Hill is a stop on this tourist railroad that operates historic steam trains and attracts thousands of tourists each year. Gold Hill is the birthplace of Marion Jones Farquhar (1879-1965), Olympic bronze medalist and two-time US Open tennis champion.
