Unionville is a small hamlet in Pershing County, Nevada just south of I-80 and west of State Route 400 on Unionville Road. The younger population is estimated at around 20 people. The town's best years came in the 1870s, when it was a busy prospecting and mining town supplying the surrounding hills. For a short time, Samuel Langhorne Clemens lived there panning for gold, but returned without much success. Currently the hamlet consists of a single activity - an accommodation facility - and a few houses grouped along or near the dirt road which allows the entry and exit of vehicles. The nearest paved road, an extension of this dirt road, is about 7 miles east. The nearest services of any kind, except those available at the hostel, are about an hour away. Unionville, now in Pershing County, was the original seat of Humboldt County, serving from its incorporation in July 1861 until its headquarters moved to Winnemucca in 1873. Unionville's great mining boom occurred between 1863 and 1870. During this period the population is said to have reached 1,500. Mark Twain arrived in Unionville in 1862 intending to pan for silver, describing the town as having 'eleven cottages and a liberty pole'. As is common in most mining communities, the town soon went into decline after the boom. In 1870 it was determined that there were almost no mineral-rich deposits in the area. The decline accelerated with the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad through the Humboldt Valley and the establishment of Winnemucca as a major shipping and trading center. Formal government no longer exists in the unincorporated village of Unionville. Some abandoned buildings, such as Twain's Cabin and a one-room schoolhouse, are still in various states of disrepair, but there are no active and ongoing efforts to preserve them. Unionville is often referred to as a ghost town. North of the city limits is a cemetery which can still be used for occasional burials. A few hundred meters further on in the district there is a detour from the main road. Aerial photographs show a large concrete foundation supporting two large structures and two or three relatively recent smaller structures. These facilities are the local landfills of Unionville.
