Jackson Heights is a neighborhood in the Northwest borough of Queens, New York. Further development came with the development of public transportation and 'garden apartments' and 'garden houses' quickly became popular in Jackson Heights. In the 1960s, middle-class white families in Jackson Heights began moving to the suburbs, and non-white residents also moved. Jackson Heights has retained much of its residential character to this day. There are also many commercial establishments around Avenida 37 and along various side streets served by Metro stations. Much of the neighborhood is part of a National Historic District called the Jackson Heights Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. A portion of the neighborhood was incorporated into the New York City Historic District of the same name in 1999-1993.
