Memphis is a village in the Town of Van Buren, west of Syracuse, in Onondaga County, New York, United States. Because of its location at the southern edge of the city of Van Buren, above the cities of Elbridge and Camillus, the Memphis area can be assumed to extend to Elbridge and Camillus as well. At the beginning of the 19th century, the country received the name 'Canton'. Sometime after 1850, the name was changed to what is now 'Memphis', probably because Canton was already incorporated. Now the name 'Canton' refers to a small community between Menfi and Camillo. From 1825 to 1918, the Erie Canal ran through the north side of Memphis. Memphis First Baptist Church was also located in Memphis from 1815 to 2013. The small community is spread over a large area as the primary land use is agriculture. Known farms include parts of Hourigan Farms, Hooper Farm and parts of Blumer Farms. There is also an area known by locals as 'The Kingdom', named after Kingdom Road. The road follows the east side of the Seneca River and runs from Jack's Reef to State Route 31. Just north of Memphis past the village of Ionia is a small, unsignposted community. Previously called Sand Springs in the 19th century, the area is now better known as Whiskey Hollow. Here is Whiskey Hollow Nature Reserve, a rough road linking Perry Road to West Dead Creek Road. The reserve has remained relatively untouched for the past century. In the reserve there is a natural spring that the local community uses as a source of fresh water.
