South Huntington is a prosperous village and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, United States. At the 2010 census, the population was 9,422. Residents have a mailing address in Huntington Station. South Huntington is the birthplace of Walt Whitman and the Walt Whitman Shops are nearby. It is also home to St. Anthony High School, Walt Whitman High School, and the South Huntington Public Library. Walt Whitman Stores was formerly known as the Walt Whitman Mall. The Abraham & Straus department store chain purchased 45 acres of land in South Huntington in 1956 to build a shopping center and parking lot. An A&S store would be the centerpiece of the mall. The mall opened on April 20, 1961. The first store to open on March 28, 1962 was Abraham & Straus, followed by Macy's on September 18, 1962. The entire mall officially opened downtown in November 1962. It was the first closed mall on Long Island. The mall had 75 stores, lighted fountains, and a reflecting pool. The parking lot had room for 5,000 cars. Renovations to the mall were completed in 1998, including the redevelopment of the main concourse and a raised parking lot. Three new department stores were also added during this time. Bloomingdale's opened on August 5, 1998, followed by Lord & Taylor on November 11, 1998. Saks Fifth Avenue opened on March 11, 1999. A second renovation was completed in November 2013. This included the addition of 70,000 ft square to the structure. as an external reform. A statue of Walt Whitman has also been added. Walt Whitman Shops is currently owned by Simon Property Group.
