Troy is a city in the U.S. state of New York and the county seat of Rensselaer County. The city is located in the extreme west of Rensselaer County and on the east bank of the Hudson River. Troy is closely associated with the neighboring cities of Albany and Schenectady, forming an area commonly known as the Capital District. The city is one of the three major centers in the Albany metropolitan area, with a population of 1,170,483. As of the 2020 census, the population of Troy was 51,401. Troy's motto is 'Ilium huye, Troja est', meaning 'Ilium was, Troy is'. Today, Troy is home to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the oldest private university of engineering and technology in the United States, founded in 1824. It is also home to the Emma Willard School, an all-girls college founded by Emma Willard, an advocate for the education of women. who have strived to create a girls' school on an equal footing with their male counterparts. Due to the confluence of major waterways and a geography conducive to hydroelectric power, the American Industrial Revolution took hold in the area, making Troy the fourth wealthiest city in the United States in the early 20th century. Thus, Troy is known for its rich Victorian architecture in the downtown area as well as ornate private homes in various neighborhoods. Several churches have a concentrated collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass. Troy is also home to the famed 1870 Troy Music Hall, which is said to have excellent acoustics in a mix of well-preserved and restored performance spaces. The area has long been occupied by the Mahican Indian tribe, but Dutch colonization began in the mid-17th century. The chief, Kiliaen van Rensselaer, named the region Pafraets Dael, in honor of his mother. The Dutch colony was conquered by the English in 1664 and in 1707 they bought a farm near the present city centre. In 1771 his farm in what is now Lansingburgh was divided into parcels. Sixteen years later, Van der Heyden's nephew had his vast estate surveyed and parceled out and named the new town Vanderheyden. In 1789, after a referendum, Troia assumed its current name. Troy was incorporated as a city two years later, extending east across the county to the Vermont line, including Petersburgh. In 1796 Troy became a village and in 1816 a city. Lansingburgh to the north became part of Troy in 1900.
