Kent is a city in the US state of Ohio and the largest city in Portage County. It is located on the Cuyahoga River in northeastern Ohio in the far west of the county. At the 2020 census, the population was 28,215. The city is included in the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Cleveland-Akron-Canton Combined Statistical Area. Part of the Connecticut Western Reservation, Kent was settled in 1805 and was known as Franklin Mills for many years. Settlers were attracted to the area due to its location on the Cuyahoga River as a site for water mills. Because of the settlement's location along the route of the Pennsylvania and Ohio canals, further development occurred in the 1830s and 1840s. Prior to the American Civil War, Franklin Mills was known for his underground railroad activities. With the decline of the canal and the arrival of the railway, the town became, through the influence of Marvin Kent, the home of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad maintenance shops. In 1864 the town was renamed Kent in honor and appreciation of the efforts of Marvin Kent. It was incorporated as a village in 1867 and became a city after the 1920 census. Today Kent is a college town, best known as the main campus of Kent State University, founded in 1910, and as the scene of the 1970 Kent State shootings . Historically, education is a center of manufacturing industry and the largest economic sector in the city. Kent State University is the largest employer in the city and one of the largest employers in the region. The Kent City School District and Kent Free Library offer additional educational opportunities and resources. Many of Kent's demographics are influenced by the university's presence, particularly the median age, median income and people living below the poverty line. The city is governed by a city council system of government with a city manager, a nine-member city council, and a mayor. Kent has about 20 parks and reserves and hosts several festivals each year, including those related to Earth Day, folk music and American Independence Day. In addition to Kent State's sports teams, the city also hosts many local and amateur sporting events at different times of the year. As part of the Cleveland-Akron Media Market, Kent is a licensed city for three local radio stations and three television stations, as well as regional affiliates of National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). The local transport infrastructure includes public bus connections as well as hiking and cycling routes. As the headquarters of the Davey Tree Expert Company, Kent is known as 'The Tree City' whilst its residents are known as 'Kentites'. The city has produced a number of notable personalities, particularly in politics, athletics, and the entertainment industries.
