Dunbar is a community in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma, United States, 17 miles (27 km) north of Antlers. Dunbar is located at 3427'31'N 9533'38'W / 34.45861N 95.56056W. A United States Post Office operated here from May 5, 1925 to January 15, 1956. It was a lumber town in Indigenous Territory. In 1880, the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad, better known as the 'Frisco,' built a north-south line across the Choctaw Nation connecting Fort Smith, Arkansas, with Paris, Texas. The railroad ran parallel to the Kiamichi River for much of its route in what is now Pushmataha County. Stations were erected every few kilometers to provide access to the site, and in particular to serve as the site for section houses. The foremen of the respective kilometers of track lived in the sectional houses and managed the track and its servitude. These stations also served as points where trains could draw water. The Dunbar site was chosen due to its proximity to the Kiamichi River with its abundant water supply. To the north and south, stops were established adjacent to Stanley. The sparsely populated area then known as Jack's Fork County of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory was home to Choctaw Indians who farmed or lived on the land. There were few roads or paths. Transportation was provided by the Frisco Railroad, which ran six trains a day, three in each direction, until it closed for passenger service in the late 1950s. Freight services continued until it closed completely and withdrew. rail service coincided with the construction of Oklahoma State Highway 2. Located in one of the most scenic valleys in the state, Dunbar is framed by Dunbar Mountain to the east and Bull Creek Mountain to the west.
