Ingalls is a census-designated place (CDP) in eastern Payne County, Oklahoma, approximately nine miles east of Stillwater. The city was founded after the unassigned land rush of 1889 and had a post office from January 22, 1890 to October 31, 1907. It was named for Senator John J. Ingalls of Kansas. In 1890 the population peaked at about 150 and then began to decline. Ingalls was a peaceful community that never saw much activity until it became the site of the Battle of Ingalls on September 1, 1893, which resulted in a shootout between the US marshals and the Doolin-Dalton gang. Three deputy sheriffs and two residents were killed, one of the residents was killed when sheriffs were killed. Several people were injured, including two outlaws, and one outlaw was captured. A stone memorial stands in Ingalls on the southeast corner of Ash and First (19th) Streets near the fire station, not far from where one of the MPs was shot dead. On June 21, 1921, a new post office named Signet, Oklahoma was established at a location just northwest of Old Ingalls and became part of a new community. Ingalls area residents protested and the name was officially changed after the lockdown. A few old derelict buildings remain, including replicas of the Ingalls Hotel, now called the Pierce O.K. The hotel is solid with stables, lounge and general store. Just across the street from the old firehouse was a school, the first Sunday school in a Baptist church. Today Ingalls has restored its tranquil nature and the population is estimated at 192 (2020). The former Ingalls Estates are owned primarily by three families who have lived in or near the town for generations; the Radfords, the Burtons and the Mathesons. Part of the seal is distributed among several neighbors and houses replicas of the city. Every Saturday night, socially connected seniors gather at the Ingalls Community Center for a musical performance. A reenactment of the battle was held on September 1 every year until about 2012.
