Picher is a ghost town and former city in Ottawa County in northeastern Oklahoma, United States. It has been a major national lead and zinc mining center in the heart of the Tri-State Mining District for more than 100 years. Decades of unrestricted underground mining have dangerously undermined most of the buildings in the town of Picher, leaving vast mining waste contaminated with toxic metals (called Cat) throughout the area. Discovery of the risks of landslides, groundwater contamination and health effects associated with cat poop (children play on stakes and place them in their sandboxes, unaware of the toxic danger) and underground wells prompted construction of the site. Listed on the Tar Creek Superfund site by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1980. The state cooperated with remedial and remedial efforts, but a 1994 assessment found that 34 percent of Picher children suffered from lead poisoning as a result of these environmental exposures . This can lead to lifelong neurological problems. Eventually, EPA and the state of Oklahoma agreed on a mandatory evacuation and takeover of the entire township. The satellite cities of Treece, Kansas and Cardin, Oklahoma, also contaminated, have been included in the Tar Creek Superfund site. A 2006 Army Corps of Engineers study found that 86 percent of the buildings in Picher (including the town school) were heavily mined and could collapse at any time. The destruction of 150 homes by an EF4 tornado in May 2008 hastened the exodus of the remaining population. On September 1, 2009, the State of Oklahoma officially dissolved the City of Picher and ceased official operations that day. The population dropped from 1,640 at the 2000 census to 20 at the 2010 census. The federal government purchased the remaining land. As of January 2011, there were six houses and one business left, whose owners had refused at all costs to leave their homes. With the exception of a few historic buildings, the rest of the city's buildings are expected to be demolished later this year. One of the last empty buildings that housed the old Picher Mining Museum was destroyed in an arson attack in April 2015. However, by then its historical documents and artifacts had already been shipped to the Dobson Museum in Miami, Oklahoma. -There. Picher is one of the few places in the world (such as Gilman, Colorado, Centralia, Pennsylvania and Wittenoom, Western Australia) that have been evacuated and declared uninhabitable due to the environmental and health damage caused by mining. The closest cities to Picher, other than Cardin, Treece, and Douthat, are Commerce, Quapaw (the seat of the federally recognized Native American nation of that name), and Miami, Oklahoma.
