Red Oak is a city in Latimer County, Oklahoma, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population was 549. Eight miles northeast of the present city is the original location of Red Oak. There, Thomas Edwards established a trading post on the Fort Smith-Boggy Depot road in 1850. With the introduction of the Butterfield Overland Mail and Stage Line in 1858, Edwards' already successful business became a stopover for mail and passengers. In March 1868, the shop was converted into an official post office with Edwards as postmaster. He called the Red Oak Post Office, probably because there were trees near the store. The official designation was Red Oak, Skullyville County, Choctaw Nation. Edwards' shop is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (#72001069). The current location of the 'new' Red Oak, southwest of Edwards, has served as a stopover between Fort Smith and Texas since the 1860s. For several years, it was a sawmill, lumberyard, and gristmill, early 21st century housed the shopping area. In 1888 the Choctaw Coal and Railway (later the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway) surveyed a route through what is now Latimer County connecting Wister to McAlester. With the arrival of the railroad a city began to grow. By 1890, Edwards' store had closed and the 'old' Red Oak Post Office had officially moved into the new community.
