Apiary is an unincorporated community in Columbia County, Oregon, USA, named after a post office founded by David M. Dorsey. The post office operated from 28 August 1889 to 24 March 1924. Dorsey is said to have been a beekeeper, giving the post office, and hence the community, its name. The community was served by Apiary School District No. 38, which operated a two-room schoolhouse and provided educational services for grades 1 through 8. At launch, it partnered with Rainier Union High School District, which provided educational services for grades 9 through 12. (The school district also included several other area school districts: Delena, Hudson, Fern Hill, Rainier, Goble, Shiloh Basin, and Neer City. In the 1960s, the districts were combined into a single district and rural schools were closed for the next 10-15 years). The community and school are located on what is now known as Apiary Road near the headwaters of the North Fork of the Clatskanie River. Currently the school building still exists, but has been transformed into a private residence. The community also includes a pioneer cemetery, but there has never been a community center such as a church, barn, or even fire station. Today, Apiary Road is a popular freight route for forest products shipped from the northern Oregon Coast Range (especially areas drained by the Nehalem River) to markets in Longview, Washington. The Apiary Freeway connects the Nehalem Freeway, called Oregon Route 47, north of Pittsburgh with US Route 30 west of Rainier. However, the intersection with US Route 30 is signed as Larson Road because Apiary Road technically terminates at Old Rainier Road, a former US Route 30 road south of present-day US Route 30.us
