Hillsboro (/hlzbro/ HILZ-burr-oh) is the fifth largest city in the US state of Oregon and the seat of Washington County. Located in the Tualatin Valley just west of the Portland metropolitan area, the city is home to many high-tech companies such as Intel, known locally as Silicon Forest. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 106,447. The Kalapuya Atfalati tribe lived for thousands of years in the Tualatin Valley near what later became Hillsboro. The climate, tempered by the Pacific Ocean, has made the area suitable for fishing, hunting, gathering and agriculture. Settlers founded a community here in 1842 that was later named after David Hill, an Oregon politician. River transportation on the Tualatin River was part of the Hillsboro settler economy. A railroad came to the area in the early 1870s and an intercity electric railroad about four decades later. These railroads, as well as the highways, helped the city slowly grow to about 2,000 residents in 1910 and about 5,000 in 1950 before high-tech companies arrived in the 1980s. Hillsboro has a city government consisting of a city manager and a municipal council headed by a mayor. In addition to high-tech industries, health care, retail, and agriculture, including viticulture and wineries, are important to Hillsboro's economy. The city operates more than twenty parks and mixed-use Hillsboro Stadium, and ten city sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Transportation includes private vehicles, public buses and light rail, and aircraft using Hillsboro Airport. The city is home to the University of Pacific Health Professions campus. Notable residents include two Governors of Oregon.
