Cheyney is an unincorporated community comprising Chester and Delaware counties in the US state of Pennsylvania. It is a census-designated place called Cheyney University, which had a population of 988 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. The college is named after George Cheyney's farm, which became the current campus of Cheyney University in 1902. George Cheyney's farm and surrounding area were part of the original land grant granted to William Penn in 1681. Originally, Cheyney it stood at the intersection of what is now Creek and Cheyney Roads. The original 'Cheyney's Shops' dated to the mid-18th century and were located at the northwest and northeast corners of the intersection of Creek and Cheyney Roads. Cheyney's original post office was located here along with the general store, hotel, ironworks and blacksmith shop. There are old maps showing that 'Cheyney' is at the intersection of Creek (sometimes Tanguy) and Cheyney Roads. All new maps show the location of 'Cheyney' on Station Road. The Cheyney family originally owned nearly 10,000 acres. William Cheyney was the first postmaster in 1835. As the railway passed through Cheyney, the post office moved to Station Road. The original station was a brick building (now a private house) which still stands on Station Road just east of Cheyney Road. The current station building houses the Cheyney Post Office. The last remaining portion of the Cheyney stores are located on the northeast corner of Creek Road and Cheyney Road. Cheyney University tore down all of the original buildings in the northwest corner in the late 1960s or early 1970s. This complex consisted of a hotel, general store/post office and blacksmith shop, and a large bank barn. On the opposite corner are a stone carter's workshop and two other associated original buildings, which still remain. These buildings were purchased from William Maison by the Cheyney family in 1847. The teamster shop operated until 1918 when William Maison's son Samuel W. Maison died. In 1934 Mary Elizabeth Maison, daughter of William Maison, sold the buildings and land. Cheyney is located on the border between Thornbury Township in Chester County and Thornbury Township in Delaware County. These townships were originally a split township with the separation of Delaware County from Chester County in 1789. The township's two offices are located on Cheyney Road near the university. The John Cheyney Log Tenant House and Melrose Home and Farm are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
