Radnor Township, often referred to simply as Radnor, is a major charter township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. According to the 2019 United States Census estimate, the community has a population of 31,875. Radnor Township is Delaware County's largest community by area and fourth largest by population after Upper Darby Township, Haverford Township, and Chester. Radnor Township is one of Pennsylvania's oldest communities. Radnor Township was established as part of Welsh territory. The first settlers were Welsh-speaking Quakers led by John Roberts with a view to establishing a Welsh barony in Pennsylvania. Around 1681, a group of Welsh Quakers met with William Penn to obtain a land grant on which to conduct business in their language. The parties agreed to establish an area of 40,000 acres (160 km2) as a separate county whose people and government could conduct business in Welsh. William Penn, an English Quaker, laid out the parish in an oblong rectangle parallel to the Schuylkill River, and the parish boundaries have not changed since its founding in 1682. In 1717, a meeting house was built by Welsh friends on behalf of the Susquehannock Indians in the municipality of Radnor on an artificial track. Radnor Parish grew up around the meetinghouse and remained the parish's center of population for 200 years. The new parish was named 'Radnor', after the county in Wales called Radnorshire. The influence of the Welsh, forced in part by high taxes to sell their lands, waned in the second half of the 18th century. A hint of Radnor's early life is preserved in street and place names found throughout the parish, such as the parish of St Davids, named after St David, the patron saint of Wales. There are several colleges and universities in Radnor Township. The two largest are Villanova University and Cabrini University. Valley Forge Military Academy and College is in the Wayne neighborhood, and Eastern University is in the St. Davids neighborhood.
