Ricketts Glen State Park is a Pennsylvania state park covering 13,193 acres (5,280 ha) in Columbia, Luzerne, and Sullivan counties in Pennsylvania in the United States. Ricketts Glen is a National Natural Landmark known for its native forest and 24 named waterfalls along Kitchen Creek, which cascades down the bluffs of the Allegheny Front from the Allegheny Plateau to the Appalachian Ridge-and-Valley. Located near Benton County on Pennsylvania Route 118 and Pennsylvania Route 487, the park spans five municipalities: Sugarloaf in Columbia County, Fairmount and Ross in Luzerne County, and Colley and Davidson County in Sullivan County. Ricketts Glen country was once home to Native Americans. From 1822 to 1827, a highway was built along PA 487 in what is now the park, where between 1830 and 1860, two squatters picked cherry trees to make flower beds. The park's waterfalls were a major hotel attraction from 1873 to 1903; The park is named after the hotel owner, R. Bruce Ricketts, who created the trail along the falls. By the 1890s, Ricketts owned or controlled over 80,000 acres (320 km2; 120 sq mi) and made his fortune clearing almost all of the land, including much of what is now the park; However, he has preserved about 2,000 acres (810 ha) of virgin forest in the three creek valleys. The sawmill was located in the town of Ricketts, most of which was north of the park. After his death in 1918, Ricketts' heirs began selling land to the state for the Pennsylvania State Game Lands. Plans to make Ricketts Glen a national park in the 1930s were thwarted by budget problems and World War II; Pennsylvania began purchasing the property in 1942 and in 1944 fully opened Ricketts Glen State Park. Rock Job Corps Centers. Improvements since the state park's inception include a new 245-acre (99 ha) Lake Jean dam, the breaking of two other Ricketts-built dams, trail changes, and a fire tower. In 1999, Hurricane Floyd briefly closed the park, downing thousands of trees; Helicopter logging has protected the ecosystem while nearly $7 million worth of timber is being extracted, a portion of which funded a new park office in 2001. The park offers hiking, ten cabins, camping (one of two camping is located on a peninsula in the lake ), riding and hunting. Lac Jean is used for swimming, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. In the winter there is cross country skiing, ice fishing on the lake and ice climbing on frozen waterfalls. The Glens Nature Area comprises eight waterfalls named in Glen Leigh and ten in Ganoga Glen which are located at Waters Meet. There are four to six named waterfalls below Ricketts Glen. The park features four rock formations from the Devonian and Carboniferous periods and is home to a wide variety of plants and animals. It has been designated an Important Bird Area by the Pennsylvania Audubon Society and is also an Important Mammal Area. Ricketts Glen State Park has been named one of the '25 Must-See State Parks in Pennsylvania' by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Bureau of State Parks.
