Scranton is a city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the county seat of Lackawanna County. With a population of 76,328 as of the 2020 United States Census, Scranton is the largest city in northeastern Pennsylvania, in the Wyoming Valley and Scranton-Wilkes-Barre-Hazleton statistical area, which has a population of 562,037 population in 2020. It is the sixth largest city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Reading and Erie. The contiguous network of five cities and more than 40 counties, all built in a straight line within the Northeastern Pennsylvania metropolitan area, functions culturally and logistically as one cohesive city, while the City of Scranton is a small city unofficially, the larger city of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has nearly half a million people in about 200 square miles. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is the cultural and economic center of a region called Northeast Pennsylvania, home to more than 1.3 million people. Scranton hosts a federal courthouse for the United States District Court for the Intermediate District of Pennsylvania. The city is commonly divided into nine boroughs: North Scranton, Southside, Westside, Hill Section, Central City, Minooka, East Mountain, Providence and Green Ridge, although these areas have no statutory status. The city is the geographic and cultural center of the Lackawanna River Valley (a local name for a small part of Wyoming Valley) and northeastern Pennsylvania, as well as the largest of the former anthracite coal mining communities in a contiguous area comprising Wilkes-Barr, Nanticoke, Pittston and Carbondale. Scranton incorporated as a county of Luzerne County on February 14, 1856, and as a city on April 23, 1866. It became a large industrial city as well as a mining and railroad center; attracted thousands of new immigrants. It was here that the Scranton general strike of 1877 took place. Residents of northern Luzerne County sought a new county in 1839, but the Wilkes-Barre area struggled with the loss of its assets. Lackawanna County did not receive independent status until 1878. Under legislation allowing residents of the proposed territory to vote on the issue, voters voted 6-1 in favor of the new county, with Scranton residents voting they provided the main support. The city became a county seat when Lackawanna County was incorporated in 1878 and a judicial district was authorized in July 1879. The city's nickname 'Electric City' arose when electric lights were introduced to the Dickson Manufacturing Company in 1880. Streetcars purely Electricians in the United States went into service in the city. Reverend David Spencer, a local Baptist minister, later proclaimed Scranton 'Electric City.' Industrial production and the city's population peaked in the 1930s and 1940s, fueled by demand for coal and textiles, particularly during World War II. But as the economy boomed after the war, demand for coal in the region declined as other forms of energy became more popular, which also affected the railroad industry. Anticipating decline, city leaders formulated the Scranton Plan in 1945 to diversify the local economy away from coal, but the city's economy continued to decline. The Knox Mine disaster of 1959 essentially ended coal mining in the region. Scranton's population has grown from its peak of 143,433 in the 1930 census to 76,089 in the 2010 census. The city today has large health care, education, and manufacturing sectors. Scranton is located 77 miles (124 km) north of Allentown, 120 miles (190 km) north of Philadelphia and 120 miles (190 km) northwest of New York.
