Bean Station is a city in Grainger and Hawkins counties, Tennessee, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,967. Established as a frontier post by William Bean in 1776, it is considered one of the first permanently settled communities in Tennessee. Thanks to its strategic location at the intersection of Daniel Boone's Wilderness Road and the Great Indian Warpath, it thrived for the rest of the 18th and 19th centuries as a major stopover for early pioneers and settlers in the Appalachian region. During the American Civil War, the city was the site of the final battle of the Knoxville Campaign before Confederate forces surrendered to a Union blockade at nearby Blaine. In the early 20th century, Bean Station experienced renewed growth with the development of Tate Springs Spa, an investment by United States Senator John K. Shields and the Peavine Railroad, which provided passenger rail service between the city and Knoxville and Morristown. In the 1940s, the city was completely submerged by the Tennessee Valley Authority over the Cherokee Dam and nearly all of the residents were evicted by order of the major estates and federal courts. After the flood, it was moved to the new intersection of US Route 11W and US Route 25E and became a popular lakefront community and commuter town for the city of Morristown in neighboring Hamblen County. It is part of the Kingsport Metropolitan Statistical Area, the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the Morristown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
