Knoxville is a city in and the county seat of Knox County, Tennessee, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, Knoxville had a population of 190,740, making it the largest city on the Great East Tennessee Divide and the third largest city in the state after Nashville and Memphis. Knoxville is the capital of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had an estimated population of 869,046 residents in 2019. First settled in 1786, Knoxville was the first capital of Tennessee. The city struggled with geographic isolation in the early 19th century. The introduction of the railroad in 1855 brought with it an economic boom. During the American Civil War, the city was bitterly divided over the issue of secession and was alternately occupied by Union and Confederate armies, culminating in the Battle of Fort Sanders in 1863. After the war, Knoxville quickly became a major manufacturing and trading center wholesale. The city's economy stagnated after the 1920s, as manufacturing plummeted, the downtown area fell into disrepair, and city leaders became embroiled in highly partisan infighting. Hosting the 1982 World's Fair helped revitalize the city, and revitalization initiatives by city leaders and private developers have been very successful in spurring growth in the city, particularly in the downtown core. Knoxville is home to the main campus of the University of Tennessee, whose sports teams, the Tennessee Volunteers, are popular in the area. Knoxville is also home to the Tennessee Valley Authority headquarters, the Tennessee Supreme Court courthouse for East Tennessee, and the headquarters of several national and regional corporations. As one of the largest cities in the Appalachian region, Knoxville has established itself in recent years as a haven of Appalachian culture and is one of the gateways to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
