Rugby is an unincorporated community in Morgan and Scott counties, Tennessee, United States. Rugby union was founded in 1880 by English author Thomas Hughes as an experimental utopian colony. Although Hughes' experiment largely failed, a small community survived in rugby throughout the 20th century. In the 1960s, residents, friends and descendants of Rugby began restoring the community's original design and layout, retaining the surviving buildings and rebuilding others. Since then, the Victorian architecture and picturesque setting have made rugby a popular tourist attraction. In 1972, the Rugby Historic District was listed as a rugby colony on the National Register of Historic Places. The experience of rugby arose out of the social and economic conditions of Victorian England, where the practice of primogeniture and economic depression had left many 'second sons' of the English nobility unemployed and inactive. Hughes envisioned rugby as a colony where England's second sons would have the opportunity to own land and free themselves from the social and moral ills that plagued English cities in the late 19th century. The colony rejected late Victorian materialism in favor of the Christian socialist ideals of equality and cooperation espoused in Hughes' Tom Brown's School Days. From the outset, however, the colony was beset by problems, including an outbreak of typhus in 1881, title disputes, and a population unaccustomed to the hard manual labor required to harvest the poor soil of the Cumberland Plateau for farming purposes. profit. By the end of 1887 most of the first settlers had either died or left Rugby. However, some persisted into the 20th century, and the city maintained a small and continuous population.
