Beaumont is a coastal city in the US state of Texas. It is the seat of government for Jefferson County in the Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area, located in southeast Texas on the Neches River, approximately 84 miles (137 km) east of Houston (downtown to center). With a population of 115,282 as of the 2020 census, Beaumont is the most populous incorporated community near the Louisiana border. Its metropolitan area was the 10th largest in Texas and the 132nd largest in the United States in 2019. The city of Beaumont was founded in 1838. The pioneer settlement economy was based on the development of the lumber industries, agriculture and the port. In 1892, Joseph Eloi Broussard opened the first commercially successful rice mill in Texas, furthering the development of rice cultivation in the region. He also founded an irrigation company (established as the Lower Neches Valley Authority in 1933) to support rice cultivation. Rice has become a staple food in Texas and is now grown in 23 counties. A big change came in 1901 with the Spindletop explosion, which revealed a huge oil field underneath and near the city. In addition to Spindletop, several electric companies have developed in Beaumont, some of which remain. The region quickly became one of the most important petrochemical refining areas in the country. Together with Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast. Beaumont is home to Lamar University, a national Carnegie doctoral research university with more than 14,000 students, including undergraduate and graduate students. Several companies have established themselves in this city over the years, including Gulf States Utilities, which was headquartered in Beaumont until it was purchased by Entergy Corporation in 1994. GSU's Edison Plaza headquarters remains the tallest building high of Beaumont.
