Bluegrove is an unincorporated community at 172 Farm to Market Road, 11 miles southeast of Henrietta, in central Clay County, Texas, USA Early settlers named the area for the oak trees that appeared blue from a distance at certain times in the day. Bluegrove Baptist Church was founded in 1878 by families living in the area around what later became the city and is the oldest extant Baptist church in Wichita, Archer and Clay counties. The church originally met at the school before erecting a church building at its current location in 1893. JL Russell was an early settler before there was a town, settling a mile south of the present parish. He was one of the founders of Bluegrove Baptist Church and donated the northeast corner of his land to the establishment of Bluegrove Cemetery, a mile south of the parish. Bluegrove also had a Methodist church and a Church of Christ, which have since been dissolved. The Bluegrove Community Center, which houses many historic photographs, is housed in the old Methodist church. Although settlers settled the area in the 1870s, leading to the establishment of the school and church before a town existed, settlement of the town began after 1882 when E.A. The police, LB Brown and EM Childs subdivided the land. Their original lands were crossed over and sold to settlers to create Blue Grove, which was later changed to its current spelling by the Postal Service. AW Flinn established a general store and Bluegrove quickly became an economic center for local farmers and ranchers. In 1895 Bluegrove got its own post office, which is still in use. The town was once home to a blacksmith shop, a garage, a laundromat, a pharmacy, several doctors' offices, a hardware store, an auto and tractor dealer, a movie theater, and many other businesses. Most of the businesses that bypassed major highways and railroads were destroyed in a major fire in 1942. Due to the hard times of the Great Depression, the exodus of young people during WWII, and more easy transportation options, most some of the companies did not rebuild or chose to move to Henrietta. Bluegrove reached a high population of 240 in the 1920s, but declined throughout the 20th century, recording a population of 125 by the end of the century. The city remains an agricultural and pastoral community. JAC Electric Cooperative was founded in 1938 and is still based in Bluegrove. The company serves Jack, Archer and Clay counties.
