Cooper is a city and the county seat of Delta County in the US state of Texas. Located between the North and South Branches of the Sulfur River, Cooper is the largest settlement in Delta County. As of the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 1,911. Initially inhabited by locals, Cooper was founded around 1870, coinciding with the formation of Delta County. Cooper grew rapidly and soon became the center of local events. The city's economy was mainly based on agriculture and the transport of local goods. A railroad line was built through the city in the mid-1890s, facilitating Cooper's growth. The city continued to grow through the 1910s and early 1920s. However, in 1926, the area's cotton crop failed, wreaking havoc on the local economy. Many businesses closed, including the railroad, and the city's population declined. Although Cooper began to recover in the mid-1930s, many of the people who left the country did not return, and the city never fully recovered. The local economy continued to depend on cotton farming as its primary economic driver into the 1960s, until it began a shift to wheat farming in the early 1970s. Since the 1970s, Cooper's population has experienced a slow decline. Cooper currently has no sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city's economy is still largely based on agriculture. Cooper is located on the eastern edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex (DFW Metroplex), a large 12-county metropolitan area that is one of the most populous in the country.
