Galveston (/lvstn/ GAL-vis-tn) is a coastal city and port off the southeastern coast of Texas on Galveston Island and Pelican Island in the US state of Texas. The 209.3 square mile (542 km2) community with a 2010 population of 47,743 is the county seat of surrounding Galveston County and the second largest community in the county. It is also within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area at its southern end on the northwest coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Galveston or the city of Glvez owes its name to the 18th century Spanish military and political leader: Bernardo de Glvez y Madrid, Conde de Glvez (1746-1786), born in Macharaviaya, Mlaga, in the Kingdom of Spain. Galveston's first European settlements on Galveston Island were built by French pirate Louis-Michel Aury around 1816 to help the nascent Mexican Empire fight for independence from Spain, along with other Western Hemisphere colonies from the Americas to the America. The port of Galveston was established in 1825 by the Mexican Congress following its independence from Spain. The city was the principal port of the fledgling Texas Navy during the Texas Revolution of 1836 and later served temporarily as the new state capital of the Republic of Texas. In 1865, General Gordon Granger came to Ashton Villa and proclaimed to some of the last enslaved African Americans that slavery was no longer legal. This event is celebrated every year on June 19, a federal holiday. In the 19th century, Galveston became a major American trading center and one of the largest ports in the United States. For a time, it was the largest city in Texas and was dubbed the 'Queen City of the Gulf'. It was devastated by the unexpected Galveston hurricane of 1900, which caused massive flooding and storm surge that nearly wiped out the city. The natural disaster on the exposed barrier island is still considered the deadliest in US history, with the death toll estimated at between 6,000 and 12,000 people. During the Prohibition era of 1919-1933, the city reemerged as a major illegal gambling and tourist center and was known as the Free State of Galveston until that era ended with further economic development and society in the 90s. the economy is centered on the sectors of tourism, health, navigation and finance. The 34-acre campus of the University of Texas Medical Branch, with more than 2,500 students enrolled, is a major economic powerhouse for the city. Galveston is home to six historic districts with one of the largest collections of 19th-century historic buildings in the United States. More than 60 structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places maintained by the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Park Service.
