Hereford (/hrfrd/ HUR-furd) is a city and the county seat of Deaf Smith County, Texas, United States. It is located 48 miles southwest of Amarillo. The population was 15,370 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated place with the name 'Hereford' in the country. Hereford's local water supply contains unusually high levels of naturally occurring fluoride. Because fluoride is used to protect against tooth decay, Hereford has earned the title of 'city with no toothache'. It is also known as the 'Beef Capital of the World' due to the large number of cattle ranches in the area. The town takes its name from the Hereford breed. The local economy is heavily influenced by the growth of the dairy and ethanol industries. The region is known for its semi-arid climate with intensive agriculture and ranching throughout the region aided by irrigation from the Ogallala Aquifer and the underlying Santa Rosa saline aquifer. Hereford is home to the Deaf Smith Electric Cooperative which serves Deaf Smith, Castro, Parmer and Oldham counties. A rich western heritage includes the Las Escrabadas ranch house of XIT Ranch, once southwest of Hereford. The restored historic structure is now on display at the National Livestock Heritage Center at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Located at 400 Sampson Street in Hereford, the museum features indoor and outdoor exhibits relating to the West Texas colony. Hereford was once known as the 'City of Windmills' due to the many windmills which supply fresh water from the Ogallala Aquifer. In December 2015, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer voted Hereford not only the 'most conservative city' in Texas, but also the United States in terms of political giving. Other West Texas communities in the more conservative range include Childress (number 9), Dalhart (number 8), and Monahans (number five). Princeton in Collin County north of Dallas ranked second. Conversely, Vashon Island, Washington was named the most 'liberal' city in the country for political giving.
