Ozona is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) that serves as the seat of Crockett County, Texas. The population at the time of the 2010 census was 3,225. Ozona is the only Census Bureau-recognized community in Crockett County named for Colonel Davy Crockett, an Alamo hero. Ozona is nicknamed 'the biggest little city in the world'. Ozona Countryside is located off Interstate 10 approximately 200 miles (320 km) west of San Antonio and 82 miles (132 km) southwest of San Angelo. Crockett County is one of the nation's leading producers of wool and mohair and is located in the Edwards Plateau region of the far west Texas Hill Country. Hunters come to Ozona in search of white-tailed deer, spears and wildfowl. The county was founded in 1891 under a giant oak tree that still stands, dwarfing the historical marker describing the event. The Davy Crockett Monument is a large statue in City Park in Town Square. Opposite the monument is the Crockett County Museum. Ozone was known as 'Powell Well' by EM Powell, a surveyor, when it was founded in 1891. It was renamed 'Ozone' in 1897 due to the large amount of free air, or 'ozone'. A flood in 1954 killed 16 people and destroyed about half of the town's homes. A heritage appreciation monument honors the pioneer families who settled the land. The three-story Crockett County Museum at 404 11th Street includes a blacksmith shop, ranch artifacts, and a wool/mohair room. A scenic drive from Ozona to Lancaster Hill west on Texas State Highway 290 offers sweeping views of the Pecos River valley.
