Capitol Reef National Park is a United States national park in southern Utah. The park is approximately 97 km long on its north-south axis and only 9.7 km wide on average. The park was established in 1971 to protect 241,904 acres (377.98 sq mi; 97,895.08 hectares; 978.95 km2) of desert land. It is open all year round, with the busiest months from May to September. Partly located in Wayne County, Utah, the area was originally named 'Wayne Wonderland' by local developers Ephraim P. Pectol and Joseph S. Hickman in 1920. Capitol Reef National Park was designated a National Monument by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 2, 1937 to protect the region's color canyons, ridges, foothills, and standing stones. However, it wasn't until 1950 that the area was officially opened to the public. Road access was improved in 1962 with the construction of State Route 24 through the Fremont River Canyon. Most of the nearly 100-mile-long lift formation called the Waterpocket Fold, a rock ridge that stretches from Thousand Lake Mountain to Lake Powell, remains in the park. Capitol Reef is a particularly rugged and spectacular section of the Waterpocket Fold near the Fremont River. The park gets its name from its whitish Navajo sandstone cliffs with domed formations, similar to the white domes often placed on the state capitol buildings, which extend from the Fremont River to Pleasant Creek at Waterpocket Fold. Locally, the term 'reef' refers to any rocky barrier to land movement, just as oceanic barriers are barriers to marine movement.
