Gunnison Island is located in the northwestern quadrant of the Great Salt Lake in Box Elder County, Utah, USA, approximately 55 miles (89 km) northwest of Salt Lake City and approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) east of the lake's western shore. and is best known as an important colony of the American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchus). California gulls (Larus californicus) also nest on the island, and occasional breeding birds include gray heron (Ardea herodias), common raven (Corvus corax), prairie falcon (Falco mexicanus), and king (Salpinctes obsoltetus ). The entire island is the Gunnison Island State Wildlife Management Area. Access to the island is restricted to prevent curious tourists from disturbing nesting birds. Wildlife biologists estimate that the Gunnison Islands population (about 10,000) represents about 10-20% of the total American white pelican population; Additionally, approximately 15,000 Californian gulls nest on the island. Historically, the island's remoteness protected it from predators and made it an ideal site for ground-nesting birds. However, due to the recent drop in sea levels, it is no longer an island. It is connected to the shore by a land bridge which can be crossed by predators. Remoteness also forces pelicans to travel 30 miles (48km) or more to find fresh water and food. Pelicans generally fly east to the Bear River Migratory Bird Sanctuary where the Bear River empties into the Great Salt Lake. In the bird sanctuary, the salinity of the water is so low that fish can live in it. (There are no fish in the Great Salt Lake.) Pelicans have also been known to fly as far south as Utah Lake, about 100 miles away. To reach their destination, large flocks of adult pelicans climb high-elevation thermals and then descend towards their destination.
