The promontory is an elevated area in Box Elder County, Utah, USA, 32 miles (51 km) west of Brigham City and 65 miles (106 km) northwest of Salt Lake City. It sits at an elevation of 4,902 feet (1,494 m) above sea level and lies north of the Cape Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. Notable is the location of Promontory Summit, where the first transcontinental railroad from Sacramento to Omaha in the United States was officially completed on May 10, 1869. The site is sometimes confused with Promontory Point, a site further south on the southern edge of the Promontory Mountains. Both places are important to the land route. At Promontory Summit, the original abandoned route crossed the Promontory Mountains, while the modern route, called the Lucin Cutoff, crosses the mountains at Promontory Point. By the summer of 1868, the Central Pacific (CP) had completed the first railroad through the Sierra Nevada mountains and was now en route to the interior plains and the Union Pacific (UP) line. More than 4,000 workers, two-thirds of them Chinese, had laid more than 100 miles (160 km) of track at elevations exceeding 7,000 feet (2,100 m). In May 1869, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroad tracks finally met at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory. It took a specially selected Chinese and Irish team just 12 hours to lay the last 10 miles of track in time for the ceremony.
