Alexandria is an independent city in the northern region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is located on the west bank of the Potomac River, approximately seven miles south of downtown Washington, D.C. In 2020, the population was 159,467. The city's estimated population has grown an average of 1 percent annually since 2010. Like the rest of northern Virginia and central Maryland, modern Alexandria has been influenced by its proximity to the American capital. It is composed primarily of professionals who work in the federal public service, the United States military, or for one of the many private companies that provide services to the federal government. One of Alexandria's largest employers is the United States Department of Defense. Another is the Institute for Defense Analysis. In 2005, the United States Patent and Trademark Office moved to Alexandria, and in 2017, the headquarters of the National Science Foundation also moved. Historic downtown Alexandria is known as Old Town Alexandria (or simply 'Old Town'). With its concentration of boutiques, restaurants, antique shops, and theaters, it's a major draw for Alexandria residents, as well as visitors. Like the Old City, many of Alexandria's neighborhoods are compact and walkable. It is the seventh largest and highest-income independent city in Virginia. Much of adjacent Fairfax County, mostly south but also west of the city, has Alexandria mailing addresses. However, this area is under the jurisdiction of the Fairfax County government and is separate from the independent city. Therefore, to avoid confusion, the city is sometimes referred to as the 'City of Alexandria' (see Neighborhoods section below). Additionally, nearby Arlington County was called 'Alexandria County' before being renamed Virginia by the Virginia General Assembly in 1920 to avoid confusion with the city.
